Quote from our March 18 update: “Dr Scott (the geneticist) believes that with all of the tests and poking and proding while we were in the hospital, we now know everything about Matthew’s uniquenesses that we possibly can at this point.”
Dr Scott was unfortunately wrong. We found a surprise uniqueness at Matthew's upper GI today. We didn’t find any blockage or reason for his reflux but we did uncover an abnormality in his upper intestines. Matthew has what they call “intestinal malrotation”. His intestines are twisted a bit different than they should be. This abnormality can cause blockages which can lead to many other dire problems. Thankfully this can be addressed surgically and should be done timely. We are waiting on an appointment with the surgeon for timing and more information.
Until then, the radiologist sent us to this site for more information: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/930313-overview which is pretty scary. I think this other site: http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/digestive/malrotation.html# puts it in layman’s terms a bit better and seems a lot less scary.
We are very thankful that we found this now, before any emergency. We will update the blog as we find out more. (Hopefully by Thursday evening.) Positive thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated!!
