Surgery Update- Afternoon 7/27

Matthew is out of recovery and in a room. The surgery was more invasive than they hoped it would be, but when the surgeon looked at his insides through the scope, he knew the only way to fix Matthew’s intestines was to open him up. Matthew now has non-rotated intestines with his small intestine on the right , colon on the left and no appendix. This configuration has the least amount of post surgical complications, though there will always be a slight risk of obstructions because of the adhesions from surgery.

When they put in the catheter for surgery, they missed the bladder and it has caused trauma to the urethra. He is now voiding blood. The urologist is taking a wait-and-see approach to see if the bleeding stops and Matthew can void (aka pee). If it doesn’t or he can’t, they may have to re-catheterize him and/or perform a surgical fix. Hopefully it does not come to that.

I have previously joked that Matthew is on a feeding strike, but for the next few days, due to his post-surgical ileus (asleep bowels), he really is NPO (meaning no food or drink). He has an IV for hydration and is on Tylenol and morphine for pain. He has been a bit groggy and asleep the majority of the time he’s been out of surgery. His color looks good, but his pulse oxygen alarm has gone off a few times so he’s been given some intermittent oxygen to help him out. Hopefully that is just a post-anesthesia symptom and will normalize soon.

As far as we can tell, we are waiting on him to hiccup, pass gas, pee, and eat before we can head home. The private room is nice, in comparison to the open concept NICU we were in 5 months ago, but it is also a bit isolating. We sit in the quiet, watch Matthew sleep and wait for Matthew’s bodily functions to start and the doctors to come see us. We’ll update when we know more. We continue to pray for complete and swift recovery for our sweet baby Matthew.
