Surgery Update- Evening 7/27

I’m going to spoil the ending of the story… Matthew is sleeping peacefully in his crib right now. I wanted to preface this story with that fact.

This afternoon was rough for our sweet baby Matthew. He was in a lot of pain and cried a heart-breaking cry that sounds like a 2-pack-a-day smoker’s cough. His pulse oxygen level dropped. His pulse rate sky-rocketed. His temperature creeped up. He never peed. Not good.

Matthew had a bladder ultrasound at 5p so a catheter could be inserted. The nurse tried, the attending tried and then they had to call the urologist. Thankfully he was able to get it inserted. It will have to be in ‘a few days’ so that Matthew’s urethra can hopefully heal. There could possibly be long term damage, we just will have to wait and see. I’m praying for him to be able to pee on his own. (Praying for pee- another thing I can add to my ‘never did before Matthew’ list.)

So with the catheter in place, his bladder empty and the morphine, Matthew is taking a nap. Thankfully, his latest vitals were good with the pulse ox up, the pulse rate down and his temperature normal.

Each doctor we talk to seems to add a day to our stay. We need his bowels to wake up, his urethra to heal, and him to eat. Little Mommy (aka Alyssa) is pretty annoyed that we’ve taken her baby. I’m hopeful that we can go home with a healed boy very soon. Thank you for the continued prayers.
