We still don’t know what is going on.
We received the call from the doctor a few minutes after 5…definitely the most stressful afternoon we’ve had in quite some time while we waited by the phone.  The heart xray indicated a ‘little overcirculation’ but nothing to freak out about. We’ll have an echocardiogram done at our cardiologist appointment on Monday.  They do not think that the heart is causing Matthew’s enlarged spleen and liver.
In one of the blood draws today, they tested for mono (negative). The other tests looking for viruses take 5 days to culture so we’ll know more on Monday if it’s a virus.  There won’t be anything they can do if it is a virus, but it would give us the explanation for his symptoms.
On a parallel path, the doctors are trying to schedule an abdominal CT for tomorrow or Friday to definitively rule out an adhesion from the Ladd’s procedure.
Matthew’s white blood cell count is perfect and he doesn’t have anemia.  I would think that would point away from virus, but I don’t have 8 years of medical experience.
Our pediatrician doesn’t think the situation is dire or emergent but this is something we want to figure out.   We have to get this figured out and the cardio sign off before we can schedule the cranialfacial surgery which would be better if it happened sooner rather than later.  Until we get it figured out, we are keeping on keeping on, struggling through the feedings and worrying about our sweet baby.  Thank you for the prayers and well wishes!

  1. From my experience with white blood and viruses - a kids with some issues in that regards, WBC actually decrease with viral infections.

They go through the roof with bacterial ones. WBC are funny little things and I would want a more detailed account of them - i.e. neutrophils and lymphocytes in particular.

I am praying most definitely and you are in my thoughts daily.
